Balaton’s gastronomic revolution

The region is also an excellent destination for fans of refined culinary pleasures: besides food delicacies, it is also worth sampling the regional wines of family wineries built upon two thousand years of viticulture, on sunlit, trellised wine terraces with a Mediterranean atmosphere.

Viniculture and viticulture go back to Roman times in the Balaton wine region, which comprises six wine regions. Besides the delicacies of the Badacsony and Balatonfüred–Csopak wine regions, which are located on the northern shore of the lake, it is worth tasting the unparallelled wine and food selection of South Balaton as well!

The menus of new wave bistro kitchens offer special dishes as well as traditional Hungarian flavours reinvented based on old recipes and using local ingredients. In addition to the region’s wine and food festivals, you can spoil your taste buds with homemade delicacies, handcrafted cheese, sausages, preserves and homemade cordials at the farmers’ markets at Káptalantóti, Tihany, Gyenesdiás or Hévíz.

Wine festivals: Balatonfüred Wine Weeks, Badacsony Wine Week

Spice up your summer holiday with a visit to a wine festival! You can participate in a gastronomic celebration with cultural programmes at the Badacsony Wine Week, but if you would rather be sipping the region's best nectars on the plane-tree-lined Tagore promenade, then choose Balatonfüred, where the wine festival lasts for three weeks.

Try it!

Eat a delicious zander, a crispy bream, or spoon up a bowlful of Balaton fish soup! When visiting Tihany, you should not miss out on the local lavender beer; before leaving, don’t forget to buy your loved ones a bottle of BalatonBor (BalatonWine) made from Olaszrizling.
