The most elegant outdoor sport: let’s golf in Hungary

HévízBalaton

Fresh air, birds singing, movement and elegance: this is golf, available in almost all regions of Hungary. But where are the most beautiful golf courses?

The first golf swing was allegedly made by a Scottish shepherd when out of boredom he hit a rock with his crook, which then accidentally fell into a hole dug by animals. According to other theories, a similar game was played in the Low Countries and China. Whatever the truth might be, the fact is that nowadays this sport is a favourite among people who want to be outdoors, be active and take part in something elegant and social. Hungary has numerous golf courses with amazing views that are suitable for professional golfing.

Budapest and its surroundings

You can test your skills on three golf courses in the capital. The nine-hole Continental Citygolf Club awaits visitors in District 3, the nine-hole Highland Golf Club in District 22, and the first complete golf centre in Pest, St. Lőrinc Golf Club, in District 23. The nine-hole, par 36 golf course consists of long, comfortably wide course sections typical of racetracks. The course includes a par 3 practice course in three sections, a driving range with 18 bays and a nine-hole putting green. One of the oldest Hungarian golf courses, the Hungarian Golf Club is located near the capital in Kisoroszi.

The best golf hotels

If you want to spend several days playing golf, the best option is to visit one of the most beautiful golf hotels in the country, since the accommodation is directly connected to the course. This ensures true relaxation away from the world, allowing you to take a break from a fast-paced lifestyle for a few days. The accommodation more than lives up to the golfing atmosphere, providing visitors with the highest levels of comfort – including activities for non-golfing companions.

The Zala Springs Golf Resort in Zalacsány awaits visitors longing for relaxation with swimming and adventure pools, jacuzzis and saunas; its 18-hole golf course is outstanding even by European standards. The driving range includes 12 covered and 40 open bays, an 18-hole putting green, practice bunkers and pitching areas. The instructors hold classes in Hungarian, English, German, Italian and Spanish for those who want to improve their game. The Greenfield Hotel Golf & Spa, located right next to the golf course with 18 holes of an international standard, is not only the perfect place to golf, but also to relax. The Old Lake Golf Hotel in Tata can accommodate 70 visitors in the former hunting estate of the ‘counts’ line of the Esterházy family.

The Pannónia Golf & Country Club in Alcsútdoboz is favoured by those who enjoy rural romance and quiet nature. Not only is it extremely close to the 18-hole golf course in Máriavölgy, but to the internationally known arboretum as well. In the heart of the Bakony, next to the nine-hole Forest Hills Golf & Country Club in Zirc, lies the four-star golf hotel with 21 rooms, where visitors can relax by playing golf, tennis and enjoying the spa.
