Located in the heart of the city, Vörösmarty Square always dresses up for the holidays at the end of the year. This year's Advent market features brand new statue lighting, visual elements hidden in light bubbles, and a monumental Christmas tree, and of course, there will be no shortage of handcrafted articles and gastronomic specialties. Whether it's a freshly baked chimney cake or steaming mulled wine, it's easy to lose yourself in the flavours and aromas of Christmas here. One of the main attractions of the square is the miniature railway, a big favourite with children, which can be ridden for free. The laughter of the little ones with sparkling eyes and the characteristic chugga-chugging of the little train all contribute to the truly classic Christmas atmosphere of Vörösmarty Square.

The Advent market held next to majestic Matthias Church in the Buda Castle District is a true time travel experience. The impressive architecture of the Church and the charming cobblestone streets create a unique historical atmosphere that is enhanced by the breathtaking panorama of the Danube from Fisherman’s Bastion. As you wander among the products of the artisan vendors, you can warm up with hot chocolate and sample roasted chestnuts, sausages, and other locally made delicacies. The market is open exclusively during the day, leaving plenty of time for a little ice skating at the Buda Castle Ice Rink, conveniently located at Széna Square.

This year, Budapest's official Christmas market will once again take place in the City Hall Park. Visitors seeking a magical winter escape are offered a variety of programmes at the City Hall Winter Experience Park, not to mention the illuminated ice rink. During the Advent weekends, candle lighting and live music enhance the cozy atmosphere. The market entices with mulled wine, winter dishes, and exciting street food specialties. Among the stalls, numerous artisans, unique jewellery makers, and craftsmen showcase their creations – a true treasure trove for those seeking special gifts of high quality for the holidays.

Advent in Óbuda offers a real festive experience: visitors are welcomed at Óbuda's Fő tér, or Main Square, with a variety of family programmes, free concerts, and a cozy ice rink. Everything is set for an authentic Advent atmosphere: the square is filled with the aromas of mulled wine, teas, hot chocolate, chimney cake, donuts, churros, and roasted chestnuts. The youngest visitors can indulge in craft activities at the Gingerbread House, while Christmas photo points provide the perfect backdrop for capturing holiday memories. The ice rink in the Main Square also holds surprises: DJ Arató’s Ice Disco, Santa on skates, and figure skating and hockey demonstrations add colour to the festivities. Moreover, free skating is also available at the Békásmegyer Market Community Area, ensuring that winter fun is abundant there as well. And for those who want to complement the Óbuda Advent experience with a little cultural enrichment, the Vasarely Museum and the Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism await visitors right near the Christmas market.

In December, Gozsdu Courtyard transforms into a Christmas market, where visitors can find unique products handmade by local artists. The selection includes designer pieces, vintage and retro-style artwork, applied art objects, mineral and lace jewellery, and unique memorabilia. The festive atmosphere is completed by Gozsdu Courtyard's fairytale Christmas decorations. The market is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking for unique, personalised gifts instead of mass-produced items, at the same time supporting local artisans with their purchases.

As the holiday approaches, Millenáris, Budapest’s Millennium Park is bathed in light: on 6 and 12 December, Széllkapu Park invites you to an intimate celebration filled with lights, music, and shared experiences. The programmes include family workshops, a petting zoo, a Nativity scene, light painting, and concerts for all ages. With its water stage, sparkling lights, and festive melodies, the venue enchants and brings the true magic of Christmas closer to everyone.

VarázsLiget (Magic Park) opens its gates again this year in front of Vajdahunyad Castle, where a fairytale world, festive lights and exciting creative adventures await the little ones. Children can take part in special challenges on the Magic Trail, and make fairy wings and magic wands in the Magic Workshop. The giant Magic Ferris Wheel offers an unparalleled panorama of the City Park, while the Magic Carousel provides fun and entertainment. The festive atmosphere is complete with Christmas delicacies such as chimney cake and steaming hot chocolate, which make the experience even sweeter. And if anyone in your group is looking for more entertainment, you can visit the City Park Ice Rink just a few minutes' walk away, or the House of Music, the Agricultural Museum, the Museum of Ethnography, and the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, all of which offer exciting programmes for young and old alike.

Beyond the Advent markets

For those looking for a special holiday experience, Happy Wonderland Budapest, located next to the iconic City Park Ice Rink, is a must-see. It is the city's first Christmas theme park, bringing a playful and joyful atmosphere to winter celebrations. The park features a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, bumper cars, and dazzling light shows for young and old to enjoy. Admission is free, and the rides operate on a token system. This magical new attraction is the perfect complement to the city's festive offerings, combining nostalgia, fun, and the sparkle of winter.

In addition to traditional Christmas markets, Budapest also offers several special light attractions. Lumina Park Budapest guides visitors through enchanted landscapes and fairy-tale worlds along a path lined with more than a hundred glittering light installations. Guests can meet characters from timeless tales and discover magical realms, while music, light, and interactive experiences turn the evening into a real adventure. This year, the Garden of Lights at ELTE University’s Botanical Garden brings the beloved story of Peter Pan to life in a stunning illuminated setting. Explore the enchanted garden, discover scenes and characters from Neverland while marvelling at fabulous lights and interactive installations.

While exploring the city, stop at Kossuth Square and admire the nearly 23-metre-tall Nation’s Christmas Tree, then stroll along Andrássy Avenue, where the long stretch between Heroes' Square and Deák Ferenc Square is resplendent in a sea of lights. The walk is made even more magical by a festive fleet of public transport vehicles decorated with sparkling fairy lights, and you can also take the illuminated cogwheel train up to the Buda hills, or step on board a boat adorned with lights and cruise on the Danube. Special winter experience awaits visitors at the ice rink in Budapest Park or at the Csepel Ice Corridor at Szent Imre Square, next to the HÉV suburban train stop.

Do you want to warm both body and soul after the hustle and bustle of the fair? Visit one of the Budapest baths, where rejuvenation is guaranteed. A great choice is Széchenyi Thermal Bath located in the heart of City Park, Rudas Thermal Bath at the foot of Gellért Hill, or one of Budapest's oldest thermal baths, Szent Lukács, or St Luke's, Bath, where traditional bath experience is combined with modern comfort. Conversely, should you desire the romantic atmosphere of a smaller bath, Veli Bej Bath of the Hospitaller Order is ideal, but you are advised to arrive right when it opens, especially during the afternoon, as the bath's capacity is limited.
