Debrecen and its region invite you to discover all it has to offer

Debrecen and surroundings

Debrecen is a superb city break destination, but you should also explore the surrounding area: the nearby Hajdúszoboszló, Hortobágy and Lake Tisza offer a wide range of activities suitable for both family entertainment, regeneration and relaxation.

It's not easy to find a destination that offers as much fun for the youngest members of the family as it does for the adults, grandparents and great-grandparents. But if you are travelling to Debrecen, in addition to the city programmes, you can also enjoy the attractions of Hajdúszoboszló, Hortobágy and Lake Tisza.

What makes it special is that it can offer something to enjoy for all members of the family, even if you have as many interests as there are people in the family.

Cívis City and the region

Debrecen offers many, many great events and attractions – you can get a taste of these even if you can only “pop in” for a very short city break to spend in Cívis City. But it’s surely worth spending a few days here and discovering the diverse attractions the region offers.

Is splashing around in the water your favourite family pastime? Then after visiting the spas of Debrecen, explore the largest bath complex of Europe in Hajdúszoboszló. The 30-hectare open-air bath offers adventure pools, whirlpools and swimming pools, as well as children's pools for the entire family: here you will find everything you need to relax, unwind and recharge. Meanwhile, grandparents can enjoy the therapeutic effects of the medicinal waters that rise from a depth of 1,100 metres, and more than 40 different treatments to promote and improve health.

If you are after more active leisure, Lake Tisza is the ideal destination for you! Get into a boat, and observe the rich flora and fauna of the lake while paddling. Or ride around the lake by bike: this is the home to the safest cycle path in the country, so even the littlest ones can join in for a few kilometres. For older children, motorised water sports or SUP may be an attractive option.

Be sure not to miss the Hortobágy, “the plain of mirages”, from the list of experiences and activities. Visit the Hungarian “Puszta”, a World Heritage site, which preserves Hungarian values and traditions dating back several centuries. Here you can learn about the traditions of herdsmen, or go on a bird watch. But the Hortobágy Equestrian Days and the famous Nine-Hole Bridge and the Bridge Fair “Hídi Vásár” on 20 August can also be an impressive family experience. If you are looking for some peace and tranquillity after the colourful festival events, stay a little longer at Hortobágy, because the star-lit sky at night will also offer you a wonderful experience!
