Debrecen, the capital of art: the Munkácsy Trilogy and MODEM await

Déri MuseumDebrecen Debrecen and surroundings

If you’re in Debrecen, be sure to check out the world-famous Munkácsy Trilogy and get inspired by the contemporary exhibitions at MODEM.

After exploring the city and enjoying its vibrant culture, how about pursuing your passion for art. Luckily, Debrecen offers plenty of opportunities to do just that – collections, museums and exhibition halls are waiting for you to explore. Among them, the Déri Museum, home to Mihály Munkácsy’s Christ Trilogy, and MODEM, where you’ll be captivated by the wonders of modern art, are most prominent places to visit.

Déri Museum

Perhaps the most popular exhibition space in the museum is Munkácsy Hall, where you can see the artist’s Christ Trilogy. Marvel at the monumental works that depict Christ’s journey from his conflict with his accusers to his death on the cross. It will be an unforgettable experience even if you’re not religious and do not know Munkácsy’s oeuvre in full detail.

Interestingly, the three paintings on biblical themes were never seen side by side by the artist himself: they were first shown together here at the Déri Museum on 25 August 1995.

Exciting “buzz” at MODEM

MODEM, the largest contemporary exhibition space in Central Europe, awaits with works from home and abroad. You’ll find works by well-known artists as well as emerging talent – perhaps that’s why there’s an exciting vibrancy about the whole place. Come and enjoy the atmosphere of this cultural institute and intellectual space like no other. It will surely inspire you, too.
