Free family activities around Lake Balaton: budget-friendly adventures for young and old

Tagore Promenade Balatonfüred Balaton

In the Lake Balaton region, you’ll find plenty of family activities that cost nothing at all. In addition to city walks and hikes, you can choose swimming and other active recreation if you want to enjoy experiences in a budget-friendly way.

Everlasting favourites: Balatonfüred and Veszprém

There are classics that never fail—the programmes offered on Tagore Promenade in Balatonfüred are exactly that. Strolling in the shade of the plane trees and among the statues that preserve legends, the entire afternoon will pass almost unnoticed. If you arrive with children, the playground next to the promenade and the one in the nearby Brázay Park will certainly bring them great joy. Here, alongside the brand-new wooden playground, sun loungers invite you to relax, and the new panoramic terrace offers a perfect spot to enjoy the scent of Lake Balaton. Organising activities with children on the Tagore Promenade in Balatonfüred is an excellent choice, as the safe, car-free environment offers playful discoveries and shared experiences.

Veszprém is just a hop away from Lake Balaton. Anyone who hasn’t visited the City of Queens for a while will be amazed—many buildings have been beautified, and the city centre is full of exciting new exhibitions. Take a walk through the Árpád-era Séd Valley, follow in the footsteps of queens and chancellors in the Castle District, or immerse yourself in the interactive spaces of the CODE Centre of Digital Experiences! It’s worth checking their current programme calendar, as free events are usually seasonal, though still available on certain days in each venue.

Picnicking in the Koloska Valley and study trail hikes around Lake Balaton

A simple hike may feel like just another walk for children, but on study trails, walking becomes a game. Try the Búbos Vöcsök Trail on Kányavár Island, the Theodora Trail in the charming Káli Basin, or the Basalt Organs Trail on Szent György Hill—each is full of discoveries and surprises.

Or, if you’re planning a relaxed day, fill your backpack with snacks and head to the Koloska Valley, where picnic spots, a forest gym trail, a wildlife park, and shady woods ensure that no one gets bored.

With your own bike, cycling around Lake Balaton can easily become a family adventure. Choose a short section, include at least one playground, and finish with a sunset stop.

Public beaches on the southern shore of Lake Balaton

Sunscreen, toys and towels—on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, often that’s all that’s needed for a perfect summer day at one of the many free public beaches. Bring some snacks, a ball and a badminton set, and the day’s entertainment is sorted!

At several paid beaches, free activities keep the children entertained. With crafts and sports competitions, time flies, and adults can also enjoy a few peaceful minutes on a sun lounger.

Try to time the trip to coincide with a summer festival or concert, as in many towns most of the events are free, and the atmosphere is sure to be captivating.
