Sacred sites, not just for pilgrims

Basilica of EgerEgerEger region

When wandering in Eger and in Mátra, you will find churches, chapels and shrines in many places. We will now introduce you to three spots worth visiting, even if you are not a pilgrim.

The Basilica of Eger

This is the second biggest church of Hungary, built between 1831 and 1836, and consecrated in 1837. Its grandiose appearance make it an outstanding sight in itself, but be sure to venture inside: the interiors won’t let you down either. The three-nave church has a transept intersecting the great dome. The sanctuary is located opposite the main entrance, and you can see the picture of St John on the main altarpiece. The great organ is also in the main nave, this is the biggest organ in a single cabinet in Hungary.

Archbishop’s Palace of Eger – Visitor Centre

Since 1740, the Archbishop’s Palace has been the residence of the archbishop. The building houses the visitor centre, where you can become familiar with the world of archbishops in an authentic milieu. You can look inside the archbishop’s treasury, library and wardrobe, too. There’s a permanent exhibition showing Hungarian saints and their legends, and visitors can also wander round the building’s baroque gardens. Moreover, in the archiepiscopal vinotheque, you can learn about the four wine regions found in the area of the archdiocese.

Virgin Mary shrine of Fallóskút

One of the best known pilgrimage sites in Mátra, and one of the most visited sacral sites of Hungary. Legend has it that the spring water here is responsible for remarkable and inconceivable healings. According to records, blind men got their eyesight back after rubbing their eyes with the water, and the lame no longer needed their walking stick after drinking the water. This wonderful spring was discovered by Klára Csépe, who found her way to the spring with the help of religious visions. Masses are celebrated at the shrine on weekends and at holidays.
