Budapest

Celebrating the foundation of the state on 20 August with fireworks has become a tradition in Hungary. The light and fireworks display on St Stephen's Day is one of the most spectacular events of the year in Budapest. Visitors to the capital can enjoy Europe’s most stunning fireworks, made even more magical by a special drone show. Read on for our recommendations of the best locations to watch this mesmerising production!

If you visit Budapest on 20 August, you can indulge in Europe’s most stunning fireworks. This spectacular display features more than forty-five thousand pyrotechnic effects, all synchronised to music and colour and draws on elements of Hungarian history, mythology and folk tradition. This breathtaking visual experience is further enhanced by light projections on some of Hungary's most iconic buildings, including the Parliament building. The fireworks culminate in a 1,300-element drone show that tells a common narrative alongside the pyrotechnic displays, evoking the country's historical and cultural heritage.

This magical fireworks display can be enjoyed from a variety of locations across the city. Read on for our pick of the best venues in Budapest.

Riverbanks

The Danube riverbanks offer one of the most memorable views of the fireworks. The best place to watch the show is from the quays between Margaret Bridge and Petőfi Bridge, where you can see both the skyrockets and the buildings involved in the light show. Alternatively, you can head to Clark Ádám Square on the Buda side or Széchenyi István Square on the Pest side. As these are the most popular viewing spots, it's advisable to arrive a few hours early to ensure you don't miss out on the spectacular display!

Buda Castle

From Buda Castle, you can enjoy magnificent views of the city during the day and the fireworks at night. The Savoy Terrace is the best place to enjoy the show, with a view of the fireworks display in all its glory. However, the area around the Castle Garden Bazaar is also an excellent place to watch the fireworks.

Garden of Philosophers

This less popular garden on the Buda side is accessible from Elisabeth Bridge. With its tranquil surroundings and statues of famous thinkers, the Garden of the Philosophers is a great place to watch the fireworks thanks to its panoramic view of the Danube and the city. You can comfortably lounge on a blanket or camping chair while watching the fireworks burst into the sky.

Normafa

The Buda Hills are a popular hiking destination that is easily accessible from the city centre and has excellent transport links. Although the panoramic hillside is almost six kilometres from the Danube, it offers a unique view of the fireworks. The meadows are spacious enough to accommodate many people and it is less likely to be crowded. You can also see the display from the nearby Elizabeth Lookout

Károly Guckler Lookout, Hill Hármashatár

Located on the second highest hilltop in Budapest, this modern lookout, named after the city's renowned former forester, offers a unique view of the Danube bridges lined up behind each other. The lookout is a popular spot for watching fireworks, but those who can't get up there won't be disappointed: there are several other viewpoints on the hilltop.

Rooftop bars in the city centre

If you want to avoid the crowds and watch the fireworks in peace and quiet with a cool drink, book a table on the roof terrace of a nearby hotel. A Rooftop Bar is an ideal choice if you're looking for an exclusive, elegant and intimate setting on 20 August.
