The Legend of the Blue Ribbon: Europe's Longest Lake Regatta

The Kékszalag (Blue Ribbon) is more than just a race; it is the ultimate test of seamanship, strategy, and endurance on Central Europe’s largest lake, Lake Balaton. Founded in 1934, this prestigious event attracts hundreds of boats and thousands of sailors every year, ranging from high-tech carbon fiber catamarans to classic wooden yachts over a century old.

The Challenge

  • The Route: A massive 155-kilometer (approx. 84 nautical miles) round-trip starting and ending in Balatonfüred. Sailors must navigate through Balatonkenese, Siófok, and the Tihany Strait all the way to Keszthely before heading back.
  • The Time Limit: Competitors have exactly 48 hours to complete the course. While the fastest boats finish in a few hours, many crews battle through the night, fueled only by coffee and the thrill of the wind.

For the Spectators
Even if you aren't on a boat, the Kékszalag is a week-long festival. The Tagore Promenade in Balatonfüred becomes a bustling hub with:

  • Giant screens broadcasting the race live via GPS tracking.
Exhibitions and family programs celebrating the sailing lifestyle.
  • The Finish Line: Watching the lead boats fly into the bay at nearly 50 km/h is a sight you won’t soon forget.
  • Fun Fact: While the high-speed catamarans fight for the trophy, the "real" spirit of the race is often found in the classic classes, where heritage and elegance meet the raw power of the water.
