10 Hungarian Restaurants Have Already Earned a Michelin Star

The number of Hungarian restaurants recognised with a Michelin Guide Star has increased from the previous nine to ten by the end of 2024. This year, the restaurant Pajta (Őriszentpéter) won its first Michelin Star as a newcomer, while all previously starred restaurants re-earned their earlier recognition. The number of Bib Gourmand restaurants in Hungary has nearly doubled compared to the previous six as the world's leading gastronomic guide recommends five more to travellers. Not only have the Hungarian restaurants retained their Michelin Stars but another one has joined them. Thus, three towns outside Budapest – Őriszentpéter, Esztergom and Tata – have Michelin-starred gastronomic bistros, and the restaurant in Tata can even boast of two stars. Meanwhile, Stand (Budapest) has retained its two previously won stars, and the six restaurants in the capital city have each retained one star. This means that a total of 12 stars, more than ever before, are shining all over the country.

It is just as important that, in addition to them, a total of 78 restaurants across the country, more than ever before, have received some recognition or recommendation from the Michelin Guide. The number of Bib Gourmand restaurants offering affordable but high-quality food has increased by five, bringing the total number of restaurants to 11 this year. In 2024, 57 restaurants across the country earned the Michelin Guide's recommendation marked with a plate symbol, and ten of them for the first time. The number of green stars, prioritising environmental awareness in their operations, has also increased by one; five places can now boast this award with the addition of Natura Hill (Zebegény).

The Michelin Guide also awards special recognition to certain professional fields every year. This year, the Sommelier Award went to Mátyás Székely from the restaurant 42 (Esztergom), while the Young Chef Award to Levente Lendvai from Virtu (Budapest). Ivett Lisztes, manager and sommelier of N28 Wine and Kitchen (Budapest) won the Service Award, and this year’s Opening of the Year Award went to Iszkor (Mályinka).

At the awards ceremony held in Budapest in December, Elisabeth Boucher-Anselin, Michelin's director of communications, said that this year's new edition of the Michelin Guide's Hungarian selection demonstrates the outstanding development of Hungarian gastronomy. “Our inspectors were impressed by restaurants that are deeply rooted in tradition as well as by catering establishments that allow full freedom of creativity in gastronomy. They are united by the pursuit of flavours and balance and the need to serve something truly unique onto their guests' tables,” she emphasised in her welcome speech.
