Christmas markets in Budapest: we’ll show you where and when you can experience the real Advent atmosphere

Szent István tér (Szent István Square, Basilica)BudapestGreater Budapest

The Hungarian capital is dressing up for Advent again this year, and will adorn itself with warm lights to tell everyone that Christmas is on its way. The smell of mulled wine and chimney cakes fills the streets and the sound of concerts echo through the Advent markets mixing with the cheerful laughter of children browsing through handcrafted products. We have collected Budapest’s best Christmas markets for you.

Vörösmarty tér (Vörösmarty Square)

15 November – 1 January

The Christmas Market on Vörösmarty tér is a perfect choice for getting in the festive mood. More than a hundred vendors come to the square every year, and this year they have been inspected by an independent professional jury to ensure that visitors get the highest possible quality in every respect. Handcrafted treasures and soul-warming food and drinks will ensure that you can experience the Christmas spirit at the end of 2024. This year there will also be a free mini railway for children. The market opens earlier this year, on 15 November, and it's good to know that the craft exhibitors and the mini railway will be available for the last time on 28 December. After that they will give way to preparations for a wild New Year's Eve party, which is also worth a visit.

Szent István tér (Szent István Square, Basilica)

15 November – 1 January

The Advent Basilica has been voted the most beautiful Christmas market in Europe four times, and this year it is trying to prove again that it’s worthy of its reputation. One hundred and fifty Hungarian artisans will set up shop at Szent István tér, offering gastronomic adventures for foodies and a wonderful Christmas tree. The 3D light show that colours the entire facade of the St. Stephen Basilica will be in place again this year either, and of course, you can enjoy other heart-warming activities every day. This market also opens earlier, on 15 November, and will welcome visitors until 1 January at 6 p.m.

City Hall Winter Theme Park and Christmas market

15 November – 2 February

A real winter fairytale empire has been built in the heart of the city, where a true festive atmosphere and fantastic food welcome visitors: the City Hall Winter Theme Park and Christmas Market welcomes kids and adults alike again this year. The special ice-skating rink connected with an ice corridor was a huge success last year. The good news is that it will be open again this winter. The advent candles will be lit every Sunday, and you can even meet Santa Claus on 6 December.

Újbuda

1–22 December

The Újbuda Christmas Market will be held between 1 and 22 December – but at a new location this time. Unlike previous years, this year you should not look for it in Kőrösy József utca but in Etele tér, next to the Kelenföld railway station. The new location can be easily reached by car and public transport. You are guaranteed to have a great time here as visitors are welcomed every year with decorative lights, handcrafted gifts and fragrant winter delicacies.

Corvin sétány (Corvin Promenade)

20 November – 24 December

The Corvin Hütte Christmas festival on the Corvin sétány in the eighth district celebrates winter with a differently themed craft market every weekend. You will be able to taste cinnamon punch or hot chocolate with your children or to enjoy some wine with your partner and friends in the evening.

The event organisers reserve the right to change the programme, so you should check the opening hours on their Facebook or Instagram pages before you go.
