Exhibitions in Budapest in 2026—not to be missed!

The Museum of EthnographyBudapestGreater Budapest

In 2026, Budapest’s museums will offer particularly strong programmes. A major historical exhibition, an international contemporary show and a photographic rarity are all on the programme—each alone worth a trip.

The First Chinese Emperor’s Terracotta Warriors—an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, 28 November 2025—25 May 2026

The exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts presents the finds from the tomb complex of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. The world-famous Terracotta Army pieces are not only striking works of sculpted art, but also part of the power projection of the 3rd-century BC empire. In addition to the soldiers, the exhibition also presents the political and funerary culture of the era, providing a comprehensive view of one of ancient China’s defining periods.

‘Attila’—exhibition in the Hungarian National Museum 23 January 2026–12 July

The Hungarian National Museum’s large-scale exhibition evokes the Hun king and his era with around 400 artefacts from 64 museums across 13 countries. Using weapons, jewellery, archaeological finds and historical sources, the exhibition focuses on the historical context rather than the legend. The exhibition also shows how Attila’s image was shaped in European memory.

Before the Storm—Ludwig Museum, 15 November 2025–29 March 2026

Ludwig Museum’s contemporary exhibition, ‘Before the Storm: Taiwan on the Frontier of Past and Future’, presents the works of contemporary Taiwanese artists. Included in the exhibition are installations, video works and conceptual pieces exploring the social tensions between past and future. Budapest Art and Antique—Bálna Budapest, 26 February – 1 March 2026

Budapest Art and Antique Fair 2026 is not a traditional museum exhibition, but an international art fair where galleries and dealers present their offerings. Classic paintings, modern works and antique artefacts are displayed together in one space, allowing visitors to view rarely seen pieces up close at Budapest Art and Antique Fair 2026.

‘Uncropped. Fragile Photographic Realities’—exhibition in the Museum of Ethnography 12 February 2026–5 July

The Museum of Ethnography photography exhibition presents early 20th‑century Hungarian photography through rare glass negatives. Revealing not only the images, but also the documentary practices of the era, the photography exhibition at the Museum of Ethnography makes the social reality behind the photographs apparent.

Posthumanist reflections – Light Art Museum

The new exhibition at the Light Art Museum explores questions of technology, the body and identity through the works of international artists. Light-based and digital installations create an immersive spatial experience, making this exhibition more a visual environment than a traditional wall-mounted show.
