Budapest activities by the Danube

In spring, the Római-part (Roman Coast) shows its most beautiful side. Stretching along the Danube in the northern part of Óbuda, it offers a peaceful stroll along the pebbled riverside alley at this time of year. The Római-part is more than just a bike path and a row of fish stalls. The light filtering through the trees, the row of boathouses and the slowly awakening terraces create a unique vibe.

The Népsziget is a completely different place. Located between District XIII and Újpest, this semi-wild area feels more like an alternative riverside than a classic park—green and industrial at the same time, with abandoned halls and piers alternating, while the Danube shows its quieter, more intimate side here. If you enjoy walking in places where the city feels full of character rather than clean and organised, Népsziget is a great choice.

By contrast, Kopaszi Dam offers a tidy, panoramic walk along the Lágymányos Bay. If you’re looking for a more organised setting, here you’ll find wide lawns and developed walkways, complete with a playground and dining options.

Within Budapest, Naplás Lake—the nature reserve in District XVI—is a particularly good spot for birdwatching in spring. Feneketlen Lake in District XI, near Móricz Zsigmond Square, is a similar oasis, though this one lies deep in the city centre. Its benches, reeds and water offer an hour of calm amid the tram noise.

Outdoor activities along the Danube Bend

If you want to venture a little further, Verőce, Kismaros and Nagymaros are easy to reach by train. With the hills of the Börzsöny and Visegrád Mountains in the background, the Danube flows broadly and slowly here. Walk down to the riverside in Nagymaros and pop into a fish restaurant.

The Szentendre Branch of the Danube has a completely different vibe—here the water is calmer and the riverside more intimate. In the cobbled city centre, it’s nice to settle into a cosy spot. Szentendre and restaurants? You’re sure to find something that suits your mood, whether you’re craving a tasty lángos or a beautifully set table with carefully prepared dishes. Searches for “Szentendre restaurant” are steadily increasing, as more and more people discover the city’s culinary offerings.

For those seeking quieter spots with piers, the Veresegyház Lakes are a great choice, offering several developed piers and lakeside rest areas. Alternatively, the green upper stretches of the Rákos and Szilas streams are perfect for those who prefer walking along shaded, streamside paths rather than wide riversides.
