Top spots to see Budapest from above – including some great rooftop bars

BudapestGreater Budapest

You can discover Budapest by strolling through the streets, crossing the iconic bridges over the Danube, or taking it all in from a tram window. But it’s also worth seeking out some elevated vantage points where you can admire the beauty of the city while enjoying a glass of fine wine, an exotic cocktail or even a delicious dinner.

MOL Campus SkyDeck – the city map, live

The MOL Campus SkyDeck panoramic terrace sits on top of the 143-metre tower next to Kopaszi Dam, which is the tallest building in Hungary. This modern, interactive observation deck offers a truly unique perspective over Budapest. From here, you can clearly see how the Danube bifurcates the city, and how the flat expanse of Pest contrasts with the rolling hills of Buda. One of the upper floors houses an elegant restaurant.

Fisherman’s Bastion – the classic Buda panorama

The Fisherman’s Bastion stands in the Buda Castle District, right next to Matthias Church, and is an absolute must-see when visiting Budapest. Part of it is free to access, while the paid panoramic terrace reveals the city’s structure in all its splendour. The Parliament’s dome feels almost within reach, Margaret Island stretches out gracefully to the left, and the Chain Bridge aligns perfectly across the Danube. Through the arched windows of this Neo-Romanesque landmark you can take especially romantic photos, as scores of international influencers have done before you!

Gellért Hill – views with a dynamic walk

Gellért Hill – more precisely, the area around the Citadel – offers superb outdoor experiences if you enjoy staying active while you do your sightseeing. Several paths lead up to the Citadel, an imposing fortress built by the Habsburgs as a symbol of deterrence, which is flanked by the Liberty Statue rising beside it.

St Stephen’s Basilica Dome – almost 100 metres high

St Stephen’s Basilica stands in the heart of the city. A lift or staircase takes you up to the dome, where your ticket grants you access to a 360-degree terrace. This panoramic viewpoint offers a complete sweep of the cityscape. From here you’ll be looking down from exactly 96 metres. This number is significant as Budapest’s largest church was built to commemorate the year 896, which is when Hungarians first settled in the Carpathian Basin.

High Life – quite literally

When the sun goes down, the rooftop terraces take centre stage, elevating not only your viewpoint but the atmosphere as well.

360 Bar sits atop a classic Pest apartment building. It feels like an observation deck above Andrássy Avenue, which is often compared to the Champs-Élysées. In winter it features cosy igloos and in summer it transforms into an open-air terrace. Expect a relaxed, sociable vibe perfect for cocktails with friends.

The city’s evening face from above

You’ll find High Note SkyBar on top of a hotel near St Stephen’s Basilica. Here, food (and very good food at that) is king, making it an excellent choice not only for drinks but also for dinner with a view.

Leo Rooftop rises above Clark Ádám Square at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge. From this spot you can admire the bridge from the side, with the lights of the Parliament glowing behind it.

Infinity Sky Bar – Budapest’s newest attraction

Cloud IX Skybar reveals a different side of the city. Located on the 9th floor of the TRIBE Budapest Stadium Hotel near Népliget, it offers views dominated by the Pest side and the stadiums. It’s a more modern, less tourist-centred perspective.

St. Andrea Wine & Skybar is a wine-focused venue offering one of the city’s finest selections. From here, the domes of downtown Pest and the Basilica stand out beautifully, with the Danube meandering in the background.

Infinity Sky Bar is located on the roof of the upscale Infinity Budapest Hotel. Its most striking feature is the infinity rooftop pool, which visually blends into the Danube. The city reveals its most breathtaking side from this extraordinary spot.
