Unique baths in Hungary: the best selfie spots in thermal spas

Rudas Thermal BathBudapestGreater Budapest

If you’re after a visual experience as well as relaxation, Hungary’s thermal spas offer plenty of photo opportunities. Domes, steaming water surfaces, cave passages and panoramas—we’ll show you the spots where the view is as much of an experience as the water itself.

Rudas Thermal Bath: views over the Danube

Hungary’s thermal spas are each unique and stunning! One of the most photogenic spots at the Rudas Thermal Bath on the Buda side is the panoramic pool on the rooftop terrace. From here, you have a direct view of the Danube, the Elizabeth Bridge and Gellért Hill. At sunset, the reflection of the city lights on the water is particularly spectacular. The interior pool area, topped by a 16th-century Turkish dome, provides a distinctive backdrop for photos, with light filtering through the openings to create a mysterious atmosphere.

Located on the Pest side, the Széchenyi Thermal Bath is one of the largest bath complexes in Europe. The yellow neo-baroque building’s entrance hall and the outdoor steaming pools showcase an iconic Budapest scene. In winter, the meeting of the cold air and warm water creates a striking mist, providing a truly photogenic setting. If you like, you can also take photos with the older local gentlemen who play chess year-round in the pleasantly warm water. Visiting the Szecska—a nickname—makes a perfect weekend outing for those living further from the capital.

Caves, jungle, domes—unique interior spaces

The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath is a rarity even in Europe, with its pools set within natural cave passages, creating a unique atmosphere. The cliff walls, winding water passages and dimly lit spaces provide a unique backdrop for photos. Sadly, the interior is currently closed for renovations. Check the website and Facebook page for the latest updates on when it will reopen!

With its domed interior and tropical plants, the indoor Aquaticum Debrecen water park exudes a jungle vibe, providing a perfect setting for a wellness weekend. The towering palms, colourful slides and sunlit glass dome provide striking compositions for your photos.

The Turkish Bath in Eger also provides a historic setting for a perfect wellness weekend, with golden mosaics, a domed ceiling and star-shaped skylights. The dome above the central pool is a particularly striking visual feature.

Hévíz Lake Bath: a nature-inspired wonder

The Hagymatikum Bath in Makó is made unique among Hungarian thermal baths by the organic architecture of Imre Makovecz. The undulating shapes, wooden structures and domed spaces create an almost fairytale-like environment, offering a unique sight both inside and out. In and around Makó, you can easily spend a weekend packed with activities.

Hévíz Lake Bath is one of the world’s largest natural thermal lakes suitable for bathing. With its steaming water surface, floating water lilies and bathhouse in the middle of the lake, it provides a perfect setting for capturing romantic, nature-inspired images—especially in cooler weather, when the mist rises dramatically above the water.

The white limestone terraces of the salt hill next to the Egerszalók Thermal Bath offer a unique sight in Hungary—and even across Europe. From the outdoor pools, you can enjoy views of the white-green terraced formations, creating a striking visual contrast. Since the nearest similar sight is at Pamukkale in Turkey, it’s definitely worth taking photos here.
