Young and old on the move: family-friendly active adventures around Lake Balaton

Sphere Lookout (Gömbkilátó) Balatonboglár Balaton

Tihany, Hegyestű, Szentbékkála—the Balaton Uplands area is full of hiking spots and nature trails with family-friendly experiences. Children will find visiting the castles, caves and adventure parks around the lake particularly exciting.

Tihany: Inner Lake nature trail and panoramic viewpoints

Tihany offers recreation throughout all four seasons. You can find great activities even if swimming is not your primary goal, as the peninsula reaching into Lake Balaton is lined with unique geological spots and historical monuments. The Lóczy Lajos Nature Trail, which traverses the entire length of the peninsula, offers a stunning panorama across both the eastern and western basins. In addition to that, the nature trail around the Inner Lake turns the excursion into an adventure, with ten stations and playful tasks. Be sure to pack some carrots or peanuts, as a bustling colony of ground squirrels has made its home by the shore and they are always keen for a tasty treat. Be sure to visit the wooden Guard Tower Lookout (Őrtorony kilátó) atop Apáti Hill, which offers an unparalleled panoramic view across Lake Balaton, the Outer Lake and the volcanic buttes of the peninsula. The heights surrounding the Inner Lake and the grounds of the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany also offer breathtaking vistas across Lake Balaton and the peninsula’s iconic landscape.

The Hegyestű Geological Exhibition Place and other rock formations

The two-tiered, vertical basalt columns of Hegyestű rising near Zánka offer an imposing sight from both near and afar. The information boards at the Hegyestű Geological Exhibition Place tell the story of the area’s geological and natural treasures in a clear and accessible manner. It is well worth climbing to the highest point of Hegyestű, where you can pause to admire the sweeping views across the Káli and Tapolca Basins.

The Sea of Stones on the outskirts of charming Szentbékkálla is a real magnet for children. Not only are the scattered rocks visually striking, but they also tell the story of the Pannonian Sea and the immense forces of nature, their wildness utterly captivating. Give it a try—can you manage to tip the gigantic Kelemen Stone?

The Lóczy Cave entices visitors with uniquely shaped rocks, an interactive exhibition and an educational trail, offering an easy underground stroll. Boating in the crystal-clear waters of the Tapolca Lake Cave is a great idea even in the rain, and its exhibition reveals the secrets of the caves hidden deep underground.

Balatonboglár Sphere Lookout (Gömbkilátó) and bobsleigh track
