Advent outside Budapest – fairs open all over the country

PécsPécs region

If you visit a town or take a trip to the countryside, it’s a great idea to connect it with a pleasant stroll around an Advent fair in late November and in December. We’ll show you the best places to visit.

Sárvár

24 November – 17 December

The Sárvár Christmas Fair will be held in Hild park and in the suburbs, where entertainment events, gingerbread, handcrafted products and an unforgettable atmosphere welcome you.

Esztergom

1–24 December

Széchenyi tér, in the heart of Esztergom, will once again be flooded with festive lights in the last month of the year. During the four weekends of Advent, you can get in the Christmas spirit with cultural, musical and family programmes, a handicraft fair and a huge selection of food.

Gödöllő

20 October – 24 December

Karácsonyház (Christmas House), one of Hungary's most unique shops, which sells Christmas decorations and evokes a festive fairy-tale atmosphere has been open every year for twenty-three years. The attraction in Gödöllő is open every day until 24 December, and it will also be open for a few days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The Christmas House is located in the centre of Gödöllő, next to main road 3, opposite the palace, in the historic Castle Captain’s Residence. As in previous years, Christmas weekend programmes are also planned this year, and the Grinch has been a recurring guest at the House since 2019.

Szentendre

2 December – 7 January

Advent in Szentendre is a atmospheric Christmas whirl, which you can get swept up in on Dumtsa Jenő utca and Fő tér. You are sure to find roasted chestnuts and chimney cake, but this small town on the banks of the Danube is also famous for its artisan masters, so you should check out the stalls of Hungarian ceramists, leather workers and makers of other handicrafts – especially if you want to put a unique gift under the Christmas tree for someone. The Christmas Museum and Shop in the Hubay House is one of Szentendre's most charming attractions. It is open all year round but you shouldn’t miss it over Christmas.

Eger

25 November – 24 December

The countdown has begun, Eger is preparing for Advent on Dobó tér and Zalár út. The organisers are sure to be have come up with some surprises this year, since in recent years Eger has hosted the most visited Christmas events of any town or city in Hungary outside Budapest. A Baroque city centre, beautiful lights and unique visual elements will guarantee you a great time. The Magical Ice Palace is a great for children. It’s an Advent playhouse where kids can play lots of games, and there is also a story-telling hut and a handicraft workshop. It is also worth taking the little ones to the ten magical locations of the Mesesétány (Fairytale Promenade): on the route from Kis-Dobó tér to Tinódi tér, kids can meet well-known characters from Hungarian fairy tales.

Győr

On Dunakapu tér and Baross út: between 26 November and 1 January and on Széchenyi tér and Megyeháza tér: between 26 November and 23 December.

One of the attractions of the fair is the Ferris wheel on Dunakapu tér, from which a wonderful panorama opens over the city centre and its surroundings. While the adults drink mulled wine, the little ones will be entertained by the little train on Széchenyi tér and the older ones can go on the bumper cars or the carousel on Dunakapu tér.

Pécs

1–24 December

Put Pécs on your bucket list because it's definitely worth a trip, especially during Advent. The fair held on Széchenyi tér, in the city centre, has a lovely atmosphere and specialties of the Pannon Wine Region are on offer every year.

Szeged

1–24 December

Szeged Christmas Weeks, which look back on decades of history, are much more than a traditional Advent fair. The Dóm tér always has a great atmosphere, especially when it’s bathing in Christmas lights and scents. Last year, a Ferris wheel was put up, from which brave people were able to look around from a height of fifty metres. We hope that it will be there this year too.

Debrecen

25 November – 24 December

December in Debrecen – it’s exciting just to say it. Did you know that this Advent fair was selected as one of the twenty best small Christmas fairs in Europe last year? The local events are organised along the Kossuth tér-Piac utca-Csapó utca-Dósa nádor tér-Rózsa utca line. Don't miss the hut and the skating rink, and you should also sign up for the Christmas Ugly Sweater Run, or at least go and check out the sweaters...

The event organisers reserve the right to change the programme, so check the opening hours on Facebook or Instagram before you go.
