Has the weather become cloudy? No problem. Indoor family activities at Lake Balaton for rainy days

Weather doesn’t have to limit your relaxation—the museums and interactive visitor centres around Lake Balaton offer exhibitions and short films that will entertain every member of the family. Exploring a cave or a castle can be a real ‘wow’ experience—we’ve picked some great family activities for a cloudy day!

Bobo Fun Park—the real adventure park

In Alsópáhok, Bobo Fun Park offers a real feast of experiences, with three floors of indoor climbing walls, slides and rope courses, a ‘real’ cave, trampoline zones and many more thrills for adventure-hungry visitors. After completing the ninja course and navigating the laser maze, head to the skyscraper walk and take a leap from dizzying heights. In the 3,000-square-metre indoor adventure park, even the little ones won’t get bored, as they can spend hours playing safely in the foam kingdom and the towering playground. And if you happen to run out of energy, you can refuel with treats from the buffet.

Kis-Balaton Visitor Centre—Tüskevár comes to life

At the Kis-Balaton Visitor Centre, you can explore the fascinating wildlife of the strictly protected area using modern, interactive tools. If you liked Tüskevár, you’re sure to feel at home here, since the exhibition spaces bring István Fekete’s novels to life. And the experience doesn’t end here. After exploring the interactive exhibition, you can discover the wildlife of the Kis-Balaton in a 27-minute film, then—weather permitting—head to the rooftop nature trail or enjoy some playtime at the playground beside the building. If your curiosity is still unsatisfied, be sure to join the guided tours as well.

Boating in the Tapolca Lake Cave

Have you ever taken a boat ride beneath the streets of a charming town? You can do this in the Tapolca Lake Cave. Since the boat ride requires no special clothing or preparation, you can confidently go underground and paddle for about twenty minutes in the crystal-clear, shallow water. Sadly, this fantastic experience ends too soon—but you can always do it again! The site’s uniqueness is confirmed by the fact that it has been listed among Hungary’s strictly protected caves since 1982. At its visitor centre, 3D films and stereoscopic photos reveal how underground worlds are formed, while children can try out what it feels like to be a real caver in the areas for touching the stone and crawling.

Tours in overalls in the Csodabogyós Cave

Ready for a real caving mission? The Csodabogyós Cave in Balatonederics can be explored wearing overalls, a helmet, and a headlamp. In some sections, the route requires crawling on hands and knees—or even sliding on the stomach. For these reasons, the site can only be visited by children aged 10 and above. Even though the cave tours cover only part of it, it’s exciting to realise that the total length of the cave’s currently known passages is 6 kilometres, with a maximum depth of 136 metres.

A historical experience at the Helikon Palace Museum

Stepping through the gates of the nearly 300-year-old Festetics Palace in Keszthely offers a historical experience and a chance to immerse yourself in a true aristocratic world. Once home to the Festetics family for 200 years, the castle now hosts fascinating exhibitions that invite visitors on a journey through time. The Helikon Palace Museum is one of Hungary’s most visited museums, featuring six permanent exhibitions across five buildings. Are you interested in the aristocratic lifestyle, the carriage exhibition or perhaps the 80,000-volume library? Explore them all! Children are in for excitement too. The historical model railway exhibition offers a thrilling adventure, while the nearby Fejőház Historical Playhouse features an exhibition on the journey of milk and hands-on activities.
