Eger, the home of the best wines
As you head from the town towards Szépasszony Valley and the modern wine bars, you can already feel instinctively that the afternoon events awaiting you are set to be something extraordinary. You pass the fruit gardens and vineyards spread across the gentle slopes around you, and then reach the valley where you can visit the wine cellars carved into the volcanic rock that you find most interesting. If you visit in springtime, after the 15 March wine festival of the Egri Csillag launch, you’ll have the chance to taste the fresh and light nectars called Egri Csillag made by local winemakers, or the unique-tasting Mátrai Olaszrizling. It would be a shame not to try local specialties, such as the Egri Bikavér and Kékfrankos, the latter being a good example of the claim that even a white-wine producing region can create something special from red grapevines.
