Rivers, forests and parks: take a walk along the Körös Rivers

Holt‑KörösKörös RiverGyula region

If you’re into active recreation, Gyula and the surrounding area have plenty of entertainment to offer.

Once you have visited the county’s larger towns and tasted all the local food specialities, put on your hiking boots and discover the region’s forests, plains and waterways. Hop into a canoe or a kayak and paddle down the Körös rivers or the Élővíz Canal. If you decide to take a tour on the Holt‑Körös, you’ll have a unique and amazing experience, as amid the bald cypress trees lining the river, you will find extraordinary wildlife with common kingfishers, otters and turtles and a huge variety of bird species.

Cycling, horse-riding and hiking

Békéscsaba and Gyula are connected by a cycle track, but you can also use the less busy roads to ride around the countryside. And you really want to soak in the feeling of rural life, hop on a horse. There are several organised horse-riding tours to choose from, and even beginners will find a good trainer to help you practise. Do you feel like hiking under massive trees in a peaceful environment? Visit the Szarvas Arboretum Nature Reserve and the Anna‑liget Wildlife Park. Szanazug lies where the rivers Fekete‑Körös and the Fehér‑Körös meet, and is another destination worth a trip if you want to spend your time in a truly romantic environment. Have we mentioned the number of fishing lakes in the area, a veritable paradise for anglers?
