Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa

Bükfürdő Thermal & SpaBükfürdő Bük - Sárvár

The sprawling 18-hectare complex is one of western Hungary's most popular resorts. It welcomes visitors with a total of 34 medicinal and adventure pools, more than 5,000 square metres of water surface, a Medical Wellness Centre and a renowned medical department. Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa® is located a two-hour car ride from Budapest, and 45 minutes from Sopron.

The medicinal water feeding the spa was discovered while exploring for crude oil in 1957. Instead of oil, 58°C medicinal water sprang forth with great power from a depth of 1,200 metres. The first medicinal pool of the spa was opened in 1962, and the establishment was expanded with an indoor area ten years later, to ensure that visitors could enjoy the benefits of the medicinal water all year round. In 1979, Bükfürdő was the tenth location in the country to be officially awarded the designation of ‘healing place’. In Hungary, a healing place is an area where at least one recognised natural healing factor – e. g. natural mineral water, natural medicinal water, medicinal climate – is present, and the conditions are provided by a medicinal institution for accessing and partaking in such healing factor(s).

The composition of the water is unique: the alkaline hydrogen carbonate, calcium, magnesium and fluoride content of this mineral water exceeds 15 thousand milligrams per litre – which is an exceptionally high value even by international standards. The water springs forth through four wells, and each of those thermal waters is qualified as medicinal water. In addition to musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoporosis and cartilage deterioration, it is also effective in treating inflammations and assisting in post-operative rehabilitation. Consumed during the course of a treatment, the water helps remedy gastrointestinal complaints, among other things.

The spa, established in the 1960's, has grown into a sizable medicinal and adventure complex, where many adventure, splash and medicinal pools, water games and a large, shady 14-hectare park ensure relaxation. It isn’t easy to choose between the adventure pool with jet-streams, whirlpools, and neck message jets, the four-compartment pool – named Four Seasons – filled with spa and drinking water, and the medicinal pools.

The outdoor slide complex consists of four tracks: the bravest can raise their adrenaline levels on the steep Kamikaze and winding Anaconda slides, the Onion slide has a centrifugal, swirling water inlet, and the family slide is a shared experience for small and large alike. The sports courts (volleyball and football tennis courts, beach soccer field equipped with small goals and beach handball fields) and the organised sports and entertainment programmes make time spent out of the swimming pools equally enjoyable.

The spa’s wellness and medical services are also famous far and wide. The Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa® Medical Wellness Centre offers massages and various therapeutic and wellness treatments in its facilities on three levels covering nearly 1,400 square metres. A tepidarium, several sauna and steam cabins, a cold water plunge pool and a jacuzzi also bring rejuvenation in Sauna World, and the stimulating sauna sessions are conducted by experienced sauna masters. It is worth noting that Sauna World is a ‘textile-free’ area – which is not the case in many other places in Hungary.
