The medicinal water feeding the spa was discovered while exploring for crude oil in 1957. Instead of oil, 58°C medicinal water sprang forth with great power from a depth of 1,200 metres. The first medicinal pool of the spa was opened in 1962, and the establishment was expanded with an indoor area ten years later, to ensure that visitors could enjoy the benefits of the medicinal water all year round. In 1979, Bükfürdő was the tenth location in the country to be officially awarded the designation of ‘healing place’. In Hungary, a healing place is an area where at least one recognised natural healing factor – e. g. natural mineral water, natural medicinal water, medicinal climate – is present, and the conditions are provided by a medicinal institution for accessing and partaking in such healing factor(s).
